Urban Decay Cream Shadow/Face of the Night

Hey Beauties,

On a recent trip to Sephora I picked up one of the Urban Decay Cream Shadows in Mushroom. I loved the asphalt grey color (described as gunmetal taupe with iridescent glitter on sephora.com) and recently I've been getting into cream shadows more so I wanted to give these a try.

I will say that cream shadows are a little harder to work with to get an even wash of color on the lids. For this one, I took the brush and dabbed a little on my lid and then blended out with my finger (the same way I do UD Primer Potion). I didn't use a lot so it was pretty sheer on the first swipe so I waited for the first layer to dry down and then I added another layer using the same method.

After both of those layers dried down I noticed that there were a spot here and there where my lid was still showing through so I took a synthetic concealor brush and dabbed a little shadow on the brush and patted it over the places that needed more coverage. I let it dry and it was perfect!

I LOVE this color and I think i'll be getting a lot of use out of it. Here's a look I did this past Saturday for my coworker's birthday party....

My Haircut! Pics!

I cut my hair again over the weekend. It grows really fast so I literally have to cut or trim it every time I go to the salon. I'm in love with it though and think I'll keep this style a while longer before I grow it out...

My Favorite Things Friday: Benefit's Gilded

Happy Friday Beauties! I'm so happy the weekend is here!

This week's favorite thing is Benefit's Gilded pencil. When this first came out (I believe some time last year) I searched high and low until I found one. For some reason (or perhaps I was just jumping the gun) the counters and Sephoras near me never seemed to have it! I FINALLY found it at a Sephora that wasn't necessarily in my neck of the woods. I'm so happy I did.
Ladies, please don't underestimate the power of Gilded...its not just your ordinary eye pencil. The beautiful shimmery gold color is the first thing that drew me in. It was the perfect shade of gold...not too shimmery, not too metallic-ey (LOL!), not too bright but not too light. Just perfect. I knew that I would be able to use this pencil in a number of ways....

1. Brow Highlight: I think I use Gilded the most in this way and this is the main reason I got it. I needed a gold-toned brow highlight that blended well and wasn't too shocking or "out there" as some gold shadows and pigments can be (for a highlight). Its perfect for that! I even like using it as a brow highlight sans eyeshadow. It gives an instant pick-me-up and brightens the eye area while defining my brows.
2. Cheek/Cheekbone Highlight: I dot the pencil on my cheeks or on the tops of my cheekbones and blend with my finger. This gives the skin a beautiful soft glow.
3. Eyeliner/Inner Corner: I like lining my lower lid and inner corners of my eyes with this. It brightens the eye and gives a beautiful pop of shimmery color.
4. Lip liner/Lipstick: Line the lips with Gilded and fill in with a clear gloss...or blend Gilded onto the entire lip and top with a clear gloss. Beautiful gold lippie!

You can purchase Benefit's Gilded at Sephora or Benefit counters for $20. That may seem a little steep for a pencil but it's soooo worth it and as you can see its totally multi-functional! Love!
Have a great weekend, beauties! Any exciting plans?

Prescriptives Motor-Eyes Instant Action Mascara

Hey Beauties!

It looks like Prescriptives is the latest makeup company to get in on the vibrating mascara trend!

Check it out....

Have any of you ladies used a vibrating mascara wand before? If so, did you like?

I have to be honest, I haven't tried it before and really have no desire to. Seems kinda gimmicky to me, plus I do a good job of applying my own mascara without the vibrations/oscillations. LOL Am I missing out on something? Holla at your girl...

Beauty Series: Milan's Rouge Mondays!

Happy Monday, Beauties!

I hope you all had a lovely weekend. Mine was great, I spent some time with my family on Saturday at a family bbq/bday party and on Sunday I had a lazy day at home just resting, watching the Laker game and catching up on my shows via dvr. Now its back to the grind for another week.

Today its time for another installment of Milan's Rouge Mondays! The blush i'll be highlighting is Black Radiance Sheer Blush in Plum Sorbet. I picked this one up a few weeks ago at Walgreen's because the color caught my eye. It was a rich, plum/wine color that I thought would look great with my skintone. I had never tried cosmetics from Black Radiance before, however, they are geared towards women of color so I was hopeful the blush would be a success.

And the verdict is....I love it! :-) Check it out...purrrty color, huh?

And here's how it looks on yours truly...

I was watching a good movie LOL! Something important happened at the moment I snapped the pic which is why i'm looking up like that :-)
I love the plum/berry color it gives. The color pay-off is great and it's easily blendable. Again, I used my stippling/skunk brush to apply and blend it out. Score!
On the rest of my face I have MAC Studio Sculpt foundation in NC50, L'oreal Voluminous mascara and MAC Baby Sparks dazzleglass (except in pic #1..lips are bare).
You can find Black Radiance Sheer Blush at Walgreen's for a whopping $3.99! Enjoy!!
Have a great week, beauties!

Favorite Things Friday: Biosilk Silk Therapy

Happy Friday, Beauties! Whew...we made it through the week! :-)

Its time for the next installment of my favorite things! I've been getting a lot of questions and inquiries on my hair and what I use so I'm excited to highlight this product that has been a staple in my hair routine for...hmmm...probably 2-3 years now.

Biosilk Silk Therapy is a lightweight, moisterizing and replenishing treatment that coats and protects the hair while giving it a healthy shine.

Here's the product description from Folica.com:

"BioSilk Silk Therapy is the perfect, lightweight, replenishing treatment to protect and maintain hair and skin and keep it in optimum condition.
The concentrated silk molecules of the BioSilk Silk Therapy impart a smooth and silky feel while providing brilliant high gloss shine with only a few drops. This ideal treatment will protect the hair from build up will not weigh it down; additional sunscreens safeguard the hair from UV damage, pollution, and dryness."

Features and Benefits:

  • Lightweight, leave-in replenishing and reconstructing treatment that eliminates frizz and repairs split-ends
  • Silk proteins penetrate the hair, bonding and strengthening it from the inside out
  • Added Vitamin B provides maximum moisture retention
  • Brilliant high gloss shine with botanical extracts and Vitamin E add softness
  • Added UV protection from sun damage
  • Great when used with a flat iron
  • Ideal for all hair types

I love this stuff! For me, it is the perfect fit. I have VERY oily hair. I get my hair done every 2-3 weeks (wash, condition, blow dry, flat iron) and after about a week my hair is usually pretty oily without me putting anything on it. Therefore, I tend to stay away from heavy serums, oils, and moisterizers because they weigh my hair down and make it unbelievably greasy. Yet, I needed something that would keep my hair healthy, give it a natural shine AND protect it from heat styling (if you use any kind of heat on your hair you really should use a heat protectant to avoid damage) WITHOUT being greasy. Biosilk Silk Therapy does all of that and then some!

I usually only apply once every week or so after I unwrap and style my hair. I apply a very SMALL amount in the palm of my hand (a little bit of this product goes a long way!), rub my hands together then I rub and finger-comb it throughout my hair paying special attention to my ends. After that I'm good to go! It has a pleasant smell and another great thing about this product is that it is safe to use on your skin. Therefore, if you apply just a wee bit too much to your hands...rub it over your arms, elbows and knees for added moisture! I love products that are multi-functional! :-)

You can find Biosilk Silk Therapy at your local CVS drugstore or HERE.

Have a great weekend, Beauties!

Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Coat

The greatest thing in my nail polish wardrobe is Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Coat. I tend to change my nail polish every 2-3 days (sometimes I'll go 4 if I'm really busy). I like changing up the colors and I like the look of fresh, glossy polish. But...I'm super busy. Like I don't have enough hours in the day to accomplish the things I need to accomplish AND actually sleep enough so I don't pass out.

Seche Vite Dry Fast Top Coat has changed the game for me. I can now change my nail color as often as my heart desires WITHOUT having to wait hours for the polish to dry down completely. This means my nails are dry and ready to go (no smudging, prints, nicks, etc) in 5-10 minutes tops (depending on if I do 2 or 3 coats of polish) and the shine...it's amazing! *swoon*

I can usually find Seche products at my local drugstore (like CVS) but if not, you can always purchase HERE.

Take care, beauties!

Also, quick shout out to one of my favorite guys...my brother Troy! Happy Birthday big brother! Mimi loves you vewwwwwy much! *muah* :-)

Quick Makeup Fix: Smudgees!

Have you ever banged out the perfect eye look only to add liquid or gel liner that looks wonky because the line isn't straight? Have you ever applied liner to your lower lash line only to have it travel raccoon style down under your eyes by mid-day? Or (my personal favorite) have you ever applied two coats of fresh fabulous mascara and then before it was dry....sneezed...leaving mascara dotted around your eyes?

Yup...that's me all the way.

I always end up grabbing a q-tip and trying to work it out and correct my mistakes, which can really be a pain.

However, today as I was flipping through my new Lucky magazine this product caught my eye. They're called Smudgees and I think they might be the answer to my makeup mistakes....

Product Description:

"Smudgees™ are cotton-tipped wands that are just over two inches long. The custom-shape is pre-moistened with an eye-makeup remover created especially for smudgees™. Precise moistening of each smudgees™ and the alcohol-free and oil-free formula mean rinsing is not required and drying is almost instantaneous.
Because each smudgees™ is individually wrapped in small, air-tight foil packets, they can be easily tucked into a pocket or purse to use whenever and wherever this annoying problem occurs. The individual, one-use packet is fast, disposable, portable, and most importantly, 100% hygienic for the delicate eye area. A small notch cut into the package allows for easy opening." from smudgees.com

Ummm...sold! I love that they're individually packaged and pre-moistened with just enough makeup remover to get the job done.

You can get a 20 pack of smudgees for $7 at Smudgees.com!

Have you tried these? What do you use to correct your makeup mistakes?

Custom Made/Pre-Made Palettes

Hey Beauties,

I have a confession to make: Sometimes...I can be lazy. I admit it and I'm not ashamed of it.
Every day during the week i'm up at 4am, out the door by 4:40, on my train by 4:55 and at work by 5:55. So I think most times my laziness is justified.
Most mornings I forego eyeshadow altogether and opt for liner and sometimes I ditch that and just go for mascara and gloss. I don't have the time nor the energy to "shop my stash" and come up with brilliant looks and color combos. Playing in my makeup is usually reserved for the weekends when I have the time to test and try combos and come up with different looks. During the week, if i'm doing shadow, I need not to have to think about what looks good with what and I need my colors in one central location.
My answer to this: custom made or pre-made palettes! (Now if only I could buy a little makeup troll that will apply it for me each morning I'd be in BIZNESS! LOL)
Seriously ya'll if I do an eye "look" during the week...you can almost bet that I'm using a pre-made palette or a custom made 4-color palette that I built myself. There's no guesswork to it, its all there and its easy. There's a lid color, a crease color, an outer-v/liner color and a highlight color. My favorite pre-made palettes right now are MAC's holiday Intriguing scarlett warm and cool eyes and Stila's talking palettes.

However, my go-to palette for the past few days has been a MAC 4-color one that I assembled myself. It includes: Tete-A-Tint, Brown Script, Warming Trend (LE) and Glamour Check! (LE). Here's how I've been using it:
Lid: Warming Trend
Crease: Brown Script
Outer V: Glamour Check!
Highlight: Tete-A-Tint
I'll probably be wearing this all week. LMAO!
So beauties, how do you feel about pre-made/custom made palettes? What are some of your favorites?
I'm loving that more cosmetic companies are allowing you to assemble your own palettes with your favorite colors (i.e. Prescriptives, Bobbi Brown).

Prescriptives Mineral Bronzer!

As summer quickly approaches I'm always game for stocking up on bronzers. I tend to ditch foundations and matte powders for glowing mineral powders and shimmery bronzers during the warmer months.

Prescriptives is creating quite a buzz with their new mineral makeup line which includes vitamin infused mineral bronzers in warm and cool, blushes, shadows, and glosses. I can't wait to try it!

The new mineral line is available for purchase at all Prescriptives counters and at Prescriptives.com

Let me know what you think, beauties!

Have a great day. :-)

New MAC Collection: Double Dazzle!

It seems every time I turn around MAC is launching a new collection. I didn't even realize this one was hitting counters today but apparently its up on Nordstrom.com!

The collection consists of 18 dazzleglasses (some repremotes from last year's launch...some new) and Dazzle Lash mascara in black and brown.

I'm literally SPENT on MAC collections right now so I doubt I'll be hauling as much as I would like but I do plan to grab 1-2 of the dazzleglasses (hey...I can't resist!).

If you want your lip gloss poppin' AND sparklin' be sure to scoop the dazzleglasses. These are HOT for summer and the staying power is excellent. :-)

Have any of you tried the Dazzle Lash mascara?

I assume the Double Dazzle collection will be up on MAC's website and counters/stores in the next day or so!
EDIT: CHECK OUT THE DAZZLEGLASS PROMO PIC!

Edit: Double Dazzle is now available for purchase on Maccosmetics.com!

New Series!! Milan's Rouge Mondays

Hey Beauties!

So this is a new series that I've been thinking about for a while now. Most of you probably already know that I LOVE lipgloss. Its like...my thing. But aside from that, I also ADORE a good blush...or cheek rouge, if you will. :-) For years I thought blush was one of those things that black women just really shouldn't wear. Mainly because I didn't know how to apply it and make it work for me. Boy, I couldn't have been more wrong! Blush (done right) can totally transform your face (in a good way!) and make you look fresh and bright. I have amassed quite a collection for myself just in the last couple of years and I would like to share it with all my Milan Rouge readers along with helpful tips and tricks to rockin' blush the right way. So tune in every Monday...you won't be disappointed! :-)

First up today is one of my all-time favorite blushes and one of the first I ever purchased. I just want to give you a little backstory to this one to show you how I came to fall in love with blush in the first place...about 3 years ago I was planning my wedding so I had a crapload of bridal magazines that I would look through daily for ideas and inspiration. So I had this one particular bridal magazine with Kerry Washington on the cover and I was IN LOVE with her makeup. I was most intrigued with her cheek color. She had this peachy glow to her cheeks that was sooo pretty and I had to have whatever it was that achieved that look. Fortunately, the magazine listed each product used on her cover look and to my surprise the cheek color was MAC's cream colour base in Virgin Isle. At the time, the only cream colour base I owned was Pearl and I only used that every now and again as a base for my eyeshadows. All the times I had been to MAC, I never really paid attention to any of the other cream colour bases that could be used as blushes because...well...as I said, I wasn't into blush.

But THIS..THIS I had to have. So I headed to look online for it...and I couldn't find it on the regular MAC website. So I called my MAC freestanding store and one of the MUA (makeup artist) told me that Virgin Isle was a Pro product. Arrrghhh...err...okay. I found the closest Pro store to me and headed there (I was serious ya'll). So when I get there, the store was busy (surprise, surprise) so I head over to the cream colour base display to look for Virgin Isle myself. I really had no clue what it actually looked like in the pan so as I'm glancing at the display I decide that the light peachy color I was looking for was not there. Just to be sure, I waited for a MUA to help me and when I asked for Virgin Isle she led me back over to the display...grabbed a BRIGHT orangey-coral pot of ccb and handed it to me. Um...say what, now?! I was instantly intimidated and initially thought that the magazine had made a mistake. THIS bright coral color couldn't possibly have created the soft warm peach glow on Kerry Washington's cheeks....

So I told the MUA that it was MUCH brighter than I expected and I didn't think it would work for me...as I handed it back to her. She insisted that the color would look beautiful on my cheeks and asked if she could try it on me. Well since I drove all the way down there...may as well...so I let her. She went to grab a #187 brush and came back and went to work. She lightly dipped the brush in the pot twice and I could feel her stippling the color on the apples of my cheeks and then swirling it around lightly to blend. When she was done she handed me a mirror and I was FLOORED. THIS was IT! The color I fell in love with on the magazine cover! I wanted to hug her...but I didn't. LOL. I happily paid for it and took home my first blush...and a cream at that! I didn't get the 187 brush because I had already purchased a Sephora stippling brush that was comparable to the MAC one.

So 3 years later, I'm a certified blush fanatic, I still have Virgin Isle (a little goes a loooong way) and its STILL my favorite. I wore it yesterday to Easter Sunday church services and brunch with the family and it never disappoints.

I love the warm, natural peachy glow it gives. And yes I used my stippling brush to apply the same way the MUA at MAC showed me a few years ago. Honestly, the stippling brush (or skunk brush as some people call it) is a Godsend. I now have powder blushes and blush cremes that are even brighter than my Virgin Isle that I LOVE...I just apply them with this brush which helps blend the color beautifully thus avoiding looking like a clown. :-)

Unfortunately, I realized today as I was editing this post that Virgin Isle seems to have been discontinued. BOOOOO!!! :-( I can't find it on the MAC Pro site. If you want it, you may want to call around to other MAC Pro locations to see if they have any in stock that they could send you. I'm going to try to secure a back-up if I can. It's THAT fabulous! Even if you can't find Virgin Isle, I hope this post (and future posts in this series) will help you step out of your comfort zone and try something different. You can try some of the other cream colour bases and blushcremes that MAC has to offer in vibrant shades. The moral of the story is that you shouldn't be afraid of the bright, vibrant shades of blush because 9 times out of 10 you CAN make it work. This is especially true of my black and brown sistas...color IS our friend. :-)

Blush Cream Tip: Once you apply the cream blush, lightly dust a translucent powder over your cheeks to set and help it last throughout the day!

Have a great day, beauties!

Beauty Series: Favorite Things Friday!

Hey Beauties!

Happy Friday!! I hope everyone had a wonderful week so far. One more work day to get through and the weekend is here.

Today I'm starting the first installment of a new series that I plan to do every friday. As the title suggests, I'll be highlighting some of MY favorite things...hey Oprah can't have all the fun. :-)

I hope you guys enjoy it!

First up...an oldy but goody and one of my all-time favorite, must have, carry with me everywhere I go products: Smith's Rosebud Salve!

This product single-handedly saved my lips this past winter season. I wear this practically every day under my lipstick/gloss and reapply throughout the day to maintain soft, supple, chapped-free lips! Its soft and moisterizing with a pleasant rose smell and I love the vintage metal tin packaging. You can also use Rosebud Salve to moisterize dry hands, elbows and knees...there's really no excuse to be ashy. LOL

A little goes a long way and its super affordable...$6 bucks! Next time you're in Sephora, grab a tin of Rosebud Salve...your lips will thank you.

Have you tried Rosebud Salve? What's your favorite go-to balm?

Take care, beauties!

Cosmetic Bags

Hey Beauties,

I tend to collect makeup bags like they're going out of style. No, really....it can't be healthy. LOL!

I'm currently toting a purple and gray plaid Hello Kitty bag that I love but I think its time to switch it up. I'll be picking up some fun, new bags for spring and summer soon. Here's some that I have my eye on:

How often do you switch up your makeup bags?

Lip of the Day (LOTD)

Today I'm rocking Mac's Currant l/l with Violetta lipstick and a little bit of Ever So Rich cremesheen glass on top.
I've been sick lately and just plain worn out so I added a touch of shimmery white eyeliner to my bottom lash line. Instant pick me up! I used Urban Decay's 24/7 glide-on liner in Yeyo.

Trend Alert: Scented Nail Polish

I'm hearing buzz that Revlon will be launching a limited edition line of scented nail polish called Fruitful Temptations this month. Here's what TrendCentral had to say about it:

"Reported to be launching this month, a new collection of eight richly colored fruit-inspired shades also boasts sweet scents - a pleasant change from the headache-inducing odor that's typically part of a manicure. As the polishes are reminiscent of the brightly colored scented magic markers of our youth, we're pretty excited to try out the Not So Blueberry and Sublime Strawberry as soon as they hit store shelves."
Hmmm...definitely sounds interesting. I'm all for a new line of nail polish and if they smell yummy that's just an added bonus!
For a review and additional pics and swatches check Steph's Closet :-)
Happy Hump Day, beauties!
